Mom, ma, mama, MOM!
Psst…mom (said in a whisper) … I’m up.
For the last four years of my life that has been my alarm clock. When we moved I actually tossed my old bedside clock, making more room for books that I’ve yet to read.
Kids are great – they have so much to teach us, their curiosity is contagious and the love they make you feel is immeasurable.
But they’re exhausting. I mean really f’ing exhausting. Can you relate?
I get tired. Cranky. Grumpy. Crabby.
I crave more time away from it all – the kids, the cleaning, the laundry, the responsibilities, the never-ending feeding. I just need to get away.
What I know for sure about myself is that I thrive best as a woman when I put my needs first – yoga, meditation, prayer, time with friends, and time alone. It allows me to be more mindful and calm, loving and intentional in all my interactions with my husband, my children, my clients and my friends.
Can I share a secret with you?
One of the reasons I started my own business was to allow for more time for yoga, lunches with friends, relaxing afternoon shopping trips, and even daydreaming.
You see, I’m really organized and very efficient in my work, especially when I know I can have my afternoon free if I get it all done. I learned this while working from home in my early 20’s. Once my tasks were finished and deadlines met (or beat), the rest of the day was mine.
Knowing this allowed me to be focused and productive.
When the responsibilities of life increased with my new role of motherhood back in 2011, I felt as if a part of me died. I couldn’t figure out how to get it all done, especially the me time. While the work of my 9-5 office job was enjoyable and not stressful, I felt that my life was meant to be more fulfilling.
Even if you don’t have children, can you relate to sitting at your desk, staring at the clock waiting for it to turnover to closing time? Do you daydream at your desk about creating your business or doing your side business full-time? Do you doodle your logo or company name while you sit in staff meetings? Are you making notes about ideas that come to you throughout the day?
Once I realized it could all be different if I made the commitment to grow my coaching practice from part-time hobby to full-time business, there was no looking back.
While being your own boss seems dreamy, there are a few things you should ask yourself before taking the leap. Here are the first three thoughts to consider:
Have you done your research?
Why are you starting a business?
What type of services or products will your business offer?
Are you prepared to invest the time and money needed to start a business?
Based on your skillset, will you thrive or struggle as a business owner? This is not to say that you can’t be successful without these skills, but it’s better to start with a clear understanding of your strengths and weaknesses.
Do you have self-discipline?
Are you willing to learn new skills?
Do you know when to ask for help?
Are you good with money?
Are you willing to outsource when the time is right?
Do you have strong marketing skills (or are you willing to learn)?
Do you know when to keep going and when it’s time to pivot?
Do you believe in yourself? Confidence will take you far in business, and the lack of it could keep you hiding where no one can find your brilliant service.
It’s your turn now. I’d love to hear from you.
Do you have an amazing business brewing inside of you ready to be brought to life?
Or have you already started your business but are struggling to make it work? If so, in what areas do you find the most challenges?
