Have you ever heard someone say they’re great at multitasking? It has become quite a popular term in recent years. I myself used to suffer from an addiction to multitasking. Out of curiosity I googled the definition of multitasking and was surprised to read, “the simultaneous execution of more than one program or task by a single computer processor.” This is concerning mostly because humans are not computers and probably shouldn’t be walking around functioning like computers.
If you pride yourself on multitasking, like I did for many years, you’ll want to check out this video.
Here are two simple tips to help you move through your to-do list faster…
1. Understand that when you’re 100% focused on the task at hand you will always accomplish more in less time. Additionally, if your task involves engaging another person, she will feel more valued by your willingness to be fully present and without distraction just for her.
2. Allow time to transition from one task to the other and do it intentionally. Try this little exercise. After your morning commute, rather than jumping out of your car and running into your first meeting or attacking your inbox, take 5 seconds to breathe. Simply STOP. Take a Deep Breath, then be. To remember this easily, say STOP. BREATH. BE. This intentional practice of a mini-meditation will support your mind to let go of the stress of the commute and move into the next task at hand. This can be used throughout the day when you move from task to task.
Okay, it’s your turn. I want to hear from you.
Would you consider yourself a multitasker? If so, share how you managed this in the past and any tips you have for being present.
What other ways have you noticed this affect your day?
