When you have small children, you spend a good part of your day reading children’s books. Likely, the same one over and over again for days until your child discovers his new favorite book.
I love to read. It’s a new found joy for me. As a youth I struggled with reading, especially reading aloud. I’m scarred for life from a few terrible experiences in middle school and one experience as a wedding reader that we’ll save for another time.
After learning I was pregnant with my son, I quickly went from fun conversations around a pub table to quiet nights at home. I read so many books in those nine months, only deepening my desire to read and learn.
But once the baby came, time became limited. Even while nursing I felt I really needed another hand to hold a book. To my disappointment, my to-read list is longer than I can handle.
In particular I’ve become more and more interested in reading the works of Dr. Wayne Dyer. I first learned of him from Oprah – isn’t that where we discover most people?
But I struggled to find time to read his many works and to allow my mind to fully digest his teachings. I thought, if only Dr. Dyer could make a small collection of books or videos for working mothers.
Then one day I learned that he wrote children’s books. So, I quickly added them to my Amazon wish list for when my son was older but forgot about them.
Until last month, when I snuck into a Barnes and Noble to use the restroom for fear I wouldn’t make it all the way home without wetting myself. Another postpartum joy – when you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go. Thankfully, there wasn’t a sign, for customer use only.
After avoiding what could have been a disaster. I decide to swing by the children’s section to see what I might find for Finn and pick up some girly books for Charleigh. It’s only fair that she shouldn’t have to read books about dinos, trucks and sports.
And there they were calling my name – three children’s books by Dr. Dyer.
I’m thrilled that he has created these tools for me to teach my children about mindfulness, manifesting and choices.
But what I didn’t expect was how loudly these books would speak to me. I think they might even be rubbing off on my husband.
So if you’re like me and desire reading books with valuable life lessons to help you move towards bringing more happiness, joy and peace into your life – especially during the very demanding time of mothering young children, I highly recommend you consider picking up Dr. Dyer’s books:
- I Am
- No Excuses!
- It’s Not What You’ve Got!
- Unstoppable Me!
- Incredible You!
- Good-bye, Bump!

In my next post, I’ll share exactly what I’ve learned from the three books I purchased that day.
